a fairground life( hot n cold)
Hot N Cold
Bbbbrrrrrrrr! The last few days have seen the temperature plummet over night well below freezing. The water lasers have been frozen for two days and there for closed. Not giving in so easily today, I primed the pump with anti freeze and used a hair dryer to thaw the guns out. That took nearly half an hour.Problem is they will be frozen again tomorrow. I think next winter we will have to put antifreeze in the attraction from the start. It will need at least 50lts as the lasers hold about 600lts of water. As for the big rides, we have been running up the pumps for 20 mins before opening to thin out the oil. All the showmen are wearing ski trousers over their usual clobber to try and keep warm. At the other end of the spectrum is the DZ in the secc. The two extra fan blowers and fitted oil cooler are working over time to try and keep it's oil cool. So far it seems to be holding at 43C. The heat is on always in there- the queues for the DZ were over 120ft long from opening til 8pm when it eased. Even then the queue was a couple of runs (ride cycles) long. Mrs Showman and r were working hard all day and the customers were getting hot under the collar (and knarky), probably from standing in queues all day. All the rides were the same, riding to capacity right until the event closed at 10pm. Even I'm hot n cold in the miami box, the heater has my feet warm but the condensation drips have my top half freezing.
After closing last night, it was pointed out to me that the jeep had a flat tyre. No problem, just put the spare on I thought. So with a bit of help we had it all done in twenty minutes. The spare is a different size from the other wheels, something to do with space saving, AKA money saving. Driving along the motorway I heard a noise. Oh! sounds like that tyre is rubbing, wait a minute, what is that juddering?? I realised it was the diffs winding up! Because of the two odd sized tyres. Now I bought the jeep as was from the showroom, with alloys the lot, standard! So how come the manufacturer can get away with supplying a spare tyre that when used will cause this problem? I mean, if I put two odd sized tyres on myself I would get 3 points and a fine, never mind about failing an MOT! Even worse, what if Mrs joe bloggs was driving her jeep? She wouldn't know about diffs and the possible resulting damage! After a few miles I got off the motorway, blew up the original flat and put it on again to get me home. Humbug!

A big thanks to Blakey for getting two tyres put on the jeep while I'm sitting in my box hot n cold. It would have been better if he paid for them too but you can't have everything. (thought I better mention that before blakey censorship caught it)
just had to thaw air system on skydiver brakes due to frozen moisture in the supply line.
Well another christmas over with, just new year to get to and thats it all done with for another year!
Im afraid the forecast dosnt look great, seems to be getting colder about thurs. Dont know how much anti freeze you would need for the lasers. Would worry that the increased concentration may damage plastics, graphics etc. Not to mention over zealous junior getting hit with splash back lol.
What about a electric pre heater for the water? Think you can get these for ponds etc.
Hope all are well and glad to hear the secc is going well, I did mention you had a raw deal being outdoors but a couple of weeks ago i was a body short, the indoor pitch needed watched and it was b.o.a light up. Guess who got the indoor gaff? So now you know where the saying "her indoors" comes from!
good one! LoL.
where would you be without blakey showman lol, it will be that time of year for you to start drawing up dates for fairs for forthcoming season?.cheers borderer
yeh! I need to come up with a new look for the site too.
how about main page background picture of the miami or dz in background show off the gear. and have a page for all your rides and general info about them?.cheers borderer
i have enjoyed reading your musings over this year.it is nice to know you young whizz kids still have the same trials and tribulations old timers like me had! and also can still come up with a showmans fit.up to get it going again!I too am a showman on square wheels .one good thing about the house is the power and the water are allways on no matter when you get home!!,enjoy!
You didnt answer the question.Where would you be without blakey. Here here. Dont worry showman does the wee odd jobs for me too.Keep that welder handy around march time.
Had the usual great christmas, all family present.Cant ask for much more. Managed to get a bit of quality time with kids this year. Wife seems to have spent last week at the shops. Some excuse about a holiday coming up. Even us part time showmen have to take holidays in winter.
happy new year to all the regular's and any new recruits to the blog this year.
ps paid a visit to fatso at indoor fair at ingilston yesterday.
Nice set up in good hall. All rides only a pound. They deserve to be doing better. Wall of death there. First time i've seen one for about 30 years. Last time was at newcastle town moor in the seventy's. Fatso said there only 2 in the uk now.
good day all ah blakey holiday alright for some lol. anyways showman hows the secc and mall doing. hope all have a good old years night have a few drams and lets hope that 2009 brings peace, loads of cash for us all and good buisness. cheers borderer.
ah and lets hope this recession doesnt last long and the economy picks up and punters of the british isles go out and spend a few quid at the fairs. 2008 has been a challenging time for every buisness weve seen woolworths close down and other high street shops will follow suit i think,2008 was also the year off hellish fuel prices but they have dropped slightly to about 86.9 for unl and 97.9 for diesel but that should be hell of a lot cheaper cut the tax and duty and hey ho you have reasonable prices that will generate less bills for people but dont it will catch on lol. anyways may i thank showman for his great blogs and pics over the past year and keep up the great work. borderer.
