a fairground life (Bellshill revived)
Bellshill time again, and as is the bane of any street fair-alterations had been carried out from last year. The old pavement slabs were removed and replaced with ones containing marble chips. The old cast iron bollards were removed and replaced with stainless steel ones, new stainless deck chairs were added and finally all new lamp posts. On top of that the kerbstones were replaced with fancy white granite ones and the pavement was widened about 3ft (1m). Well the place looked a million dollars and that was the problem- the risk of damage to the new works. We had to lay sheets of ply down to protect the slabs while we set the rides. That was after we turned them up a side street and reversed them 300yrd along the road, through a chicane and jackknifed onto the plot. That was the miami set, now we had to repeat it for the DZ. It was a little after 6pm when we got to the street but it was well after 8pm before the two rides were set. "r" and I got stuck into the DZ rapid style, you can imagine how it was holding everyone else up as they waited for us to swing the tower and raise it out of the way. After that the pressure seemed off, all we had to do was the miami and then find a plot for the water lasers. The new street furniture had resulted in a re-setting of the fairs layout and the usual plots had been used to accommodate other displaced equipment. Three new additions to the fair this year are the speed Buzz, Galaxy Trabant and AP's recently acquired Mirror Maze. In fact the fair looked well, new tackle, new layout and new pavements what else could one want? Maybe sunshine? It seemed a long day and at 11pm we were finally done and headed home. I'll be there tomorrow while "r" heads of to Drymen show.

Sounds like a neat piece of driving Mr Showman. Ive often wondered how all the tackle manages to get placed, its not always an open field for you to operate in and some of the street fairs I supposee would have to be planned as to who moves in to there spot first so as not to block other machines getting positioned. Whitby regatta springs to mind, and I reckon there must be a host of others. So how do you do it showman? I know that you have positions allotted as to the amount of times attended is that right? but if you are at Belshill what do you do if some one is late can you take there spot say for the dz and sublet your spot when he arrives or stand in a queue waiting for him. Ive been looking at Peter Morans stuff of the old Scottish Fair Grounds recently some nice shots of the old fairs its great that someone has the time to record all this stuff before it gets lost, speaking of history showman we have had some good pages in the wf about famly life on the tobers one I can recall from Val Moody and another from Gilbert Chadwick made very good reading so what about you showman any old pics and the odd story to add? I know you are going to say don't you think I have enough to do but may be after the backend runs you may find time, hope so, Regards Flatty
Sounds tight there showman, never see the need for councils to keep re doing town centres, always seems to be a mass collection of road humps and one way systems designed to confuse.
Well i am nearly free of the indoor pitch, first load moved today closer to the first event and second moves sun eve after close. Has been slow here but the indoor pitch always suffers when the sun shines. Just hope it lasts, how is the move going borderer? Skyliner c and blakey where are you working? Your right there John, Peters site has some good pics, well worth a visit.
Hope everyone has a good season!
evening all, the move starts next week and with my significent other on buisness for 3 weeks im left to deal with it myself. we have just sold the original farm house to my mate and his gf so im living in a 4 berth caravan at the moment its great piece and quiet. hows tricks with yourself jesters oh and where blakey hiding.
evening just returned from hawick, the funfair will be heading into the common haugh over the next couple of days, as i went to drive out the haugh en route home i noticed that "b's" kia and caravan were heading into the haugh first sign of the funfair in town, showman congratulate ur bro for being first there lol. cheers borderer
evening all i see hawick haugh is filling up nicely, well as miss borderer is on buis for 3 weeks i thot i would get moved in to new house this week how wrong could i get as the misses wanted a posh staircase like those you see on grand designs well it was built and took 3 hours to get into house and when the specialists were fitting in the apprentice lad fell through a section that was obviously botched up until fitting so we have downstairs kinda filled and upstairs a no go eek! showman im going to stick by my words and i will come along to west linton on saturday night to see you many thanks borderer.

Hope the lads are all making a coin or two at wl, weather has been a bit mixed for them! My first decent sized event last sat was good, weather was fantastic and all the kit worked despite the poor set suffering in the heat. Think mrs jesters was suffering in the heat too. All in a good start but the weather is looking a bit dodgy this sat sun. Three seperate events this weekend so hope it stays dry. All the best to the regs, borderer, john, skyliner, blakey and co.
