a fairground life(40s a magic number)

I called a few tyre suppliers for quotes on the miami tyre, an odd size 275 x 70 x 22.5 . The prices ranged from £170-£320, what a difference! I decided to go for a dealer that quoted me £186 inc vat, not because he was the cheapest but because he had one in stock and he was the closest. So "r" took the blow out off, we stuck it in the pick up and off we went. On arrival at the depot we bumped into the owner, he knows a lot of showmen and offered me a part worn tyre instead. In two minds I had a look at it and it was nearly new, it had only been in for a puncture repair, plus it was only £40 now that's what Dickinson would call a "Bargain". Later in the afternoon I called fatso to see if he had paid my debt for the brake chamber. Good to his word he had been in and settled up with the head mechanic. I asked in trepidation how much? OHHHH! he said, it was dear, £40 for cash! Now that was a lot cheaper than I could have got the chamber for. So 40 is my magic number today and as I've said before- a penny saved is a penny earned!

Is that the langholm bit over then. You forgot to mention the night your generator overheated. Was it not something to do with you forgeting to open the flap to let some air in. Cant believe i still have to police this rubbish. You should know you have to tell the truth by now.

between larger louts, bust brake chambers and blow outs the generator overheat is insignificant!

Overheat considered to be insignificant. Oh lord to have that kind of money where potentially cooking a genarator is merely considered to be insignificant. Talk about the have's and the have not's lol.

Thats the best comment ive ever read. Your right an overheated generator would be a massive deal to us little people. I had trouble with mine a couple of years ago. I had to cut holes in the floor of the lorry to improve the air flow round the set.I wish i could afford a flap like showman. If i was lucky enough to have one,i would certainly open it every time.

Blakey

I left a message on one of the earlier pages, whats up with your motor ?

pmsl. Yes if someone cooked my generator there may well be a murrrrder As taggart would say. Mine seems to cope ok if i leave the front windows down and the back door open (with mesh guard in place to keep the neds out)
The bearing i got last week was the wrong one but a trip to the bearing man in grangemouth has sorted that. What a place, miles of bearings and hydraulic bits as far as the eye can see! Hope to fit this on sat coming. Glad to see all the usuals are well, lucky escape with the blow out showman.
Could have been worse.
Aye i must admit i would love to be able to have a spare towing vehicle now that would be luxury!

IF blakey knew what was wrong with his lorry he would be able to tell you-but he doesn't so he can't nor can he fix it! but I have a new idea and I'll pass it on to him tomorrow........

Ok showman you win . I will tell your readers about my troubles with the blakeymobile,if only to brighten up this dirge of a blog.
The problem with said lorry is that it is not starting very well, and sometimes not at all. It was in the first 3 years of my ownership,a great wee starter. It always struck up on the first turn of the key. That was until about middle of last summer, were it began to take a bit more turning over. I had fitted new batteries in the spring. Hold on this could take for ever so here's a run down of everything ive tried since probs began. Had batteries checked dead cell in one got it replaced. This helped in short term but still not instant start. Cleaned out fuel tank and fitted non return valve[thought must be fuel].Still probs.Got auto electrician out he though def electrical so he fitted cellenoid this give extra heat before starting up. Told me to turn ignition till light came on count to thirty and yes it kicked up. As before sometimes instant sometimes turned over a few times first. This got me through one day events over winter. Did need battery charger on some starts as batteries were taking lot of stick. Come spring took batteries off to discover had been given 105 amp instead of 125amp that were on lorry previously. Changed batteries also had electric stop checked around this time. Still same problems. Could go to lorry after it sit for week and it would start then go to it next day and it turn over again. Also cracked injectors in november plenty fuel p__S out. Lorry seemed to be starting not to bad in march then had to shift it 3 or 4 times in yard to let showman or fatso in or out.Went to start it two weeks ago to go to one of my own events and it would'nt start at all. Had to use the dreaded airostart. Got to event lorry sat three days then started no problem for journey home. Time to call a mechanic. He though must be fuel i explained why i did'nt think so.He cracked injectors and as he put it the fuel p____ed out over his sholder. He then check electric stop with valt meter it geting power. He then finds one heater plug not working. Two days later new heater plugs in still no joy. He then find extra glass filter cleans this out,it full of dirt and water this could be it. Batteries goosed now so charge overnight then try again no joy it still turning over. He is on way back today. He gonna take out electric stop and test properly. He thinks it might be weak and need the fuel to open properly. Anyway thats where we at at moment. Very frustrating when you dont know where problem is. Lots of theories over last few months. Fatso thought prob with pump, but once started it performs just the same when driving. Showman think diesel running back, but why then does it start after a week then not after a day.Its very inconsistant. If anyone out there finds my tether, you'll see me hanging from the end of it.
You happy now showman. I always said i'd leave the problem page bit to you,and i'd do the policing of this rubbish, and the funny and entertaining bits.

suggest you try a solenoid instead of that foriegn cellenoid and a volt meter would test the voltage better than that valt thingy!! Oh by the way big ugly says Drymen might be off!!! NO JOKE, is there room on your tether for both of us?

I wrote that much i did'nt have time to do a spell check. I was also in a hurry cos some of us have a proper job to go to.
ps If your gonna take the p__s get your own spelling right. I'm sure it's foreign. What a donkey.

Thanks for the suggestion ss. Not sure if fitted with exhauster, but almost sure the electric stopper is the problem. Have removed the old one and lorry starting great. New one ordered to collect next week. It was checked before as i mentioned, and seemed to be working, but mechanic thinks there is a weekness that stops it opening properly all the time. Fingers crossed. I will let the world know the outcome next week. Hope the part arrives on time as lorry going to set up for next weekend on wednesday.
PS i wont anounce if successfull on the blog. I wont have to cos the world will either hear me cheering or my sigh of relief.

It’s a long time since we operated FLC’s so apologies in advance if I’ve got it wrong as I’m relying totally on the old memory. As far as I can remember I think ours were fitted with exhausters (a button on the floor designed to be pressed by the left heel and which acts like an engine retarder to slow the vehicle down). Again from memory I think on the FLC’s this was part mechanical (diaphragm valve) and part electronic (relay solenoid) meaning that that unless the solenoid was obtaining a tracer feed, when checked with a volt meter it will look OK until such times as its under a load, then its possibly starting to breakdown. Easy solution which you have already identified. Disconnect the relay (four wires that should all be attached via a multi plug just behind the fuel pump). If the engine then starts first time, especially from cold, you’ve located you’re problem. If the solenoid value is defective I suggest you replace it ASAP. While it’s disconnected, apart from you having to beat up the clutch to stall the vehicle, the strangler relay also works in conjunction with the vehicles fuel management system to regulate emissions. Immediate PG9 if found to be disconnected.
