a fairground life
Sunday afternoon, "r" and I head back to WL to pick up the DZ and two touring caravans to take them to Selkirk. We will have to leave the Miami for a second trip as there aren't enough drivers. We pick up the water hoses etc and couple the trailers ready to leave, but when we try to start the DZ lorry- nothing. I mean nothing, not even a groan from the starter to indicate a flat battery, no dash lights, no ignition click, nil , nada , zilch, zero, squat, absolutely nothing! We tried to bridge the battery isolator incase it had failed, we tried to bridge the battery bridge incase it was faulty, we put on the booster starter too- still nothing, as if there were no electrics at all on the vehicle. So by now I reckon this problem will be very simple or impossible. I started by removing the control panel and looking for jumped circuit breakers-none. Next I started checking all the fuses (all ok) and finally I messed around with a big lump that was the main solenoid/contactor unit-at that everything sprung to life, lights, buzzers etc. So simple it was (LUCKILY, as I was running out of thing to fiddle with) and at that we started the engine. I think it was just corrosion on a small 5A fuse on the solenoid. We set off for Selkirk and arrived on the lovely Victoria Park 90mins later. The Fair was already marked out and we set the DZ on its plot. The trailer was set and the power put on then "r", "bj" (who was getting a lift with us) returned to WL for the next loads. On our return we stopped at mickydee's for take out lunch. Just before arriving at WL I got a call to say the skydiver was tripping an RCCB on the switch board, I though I was going to have to go there to fix it but by the time we arrived at WL my father in law had solved the problem. So "r" set off in the Foden & miami, bj in his car and me following with the L200. This time when we got back to Selkirk we set the miami and started to build the DZ right away. This was so that we didn't have to worry about holding anyone back in the morning. It was nearly 9pm now and the DZ was levelled with the tower swung around ready to be raised in the morning.
Monday morning about noon we started to setup, we must have been tired from the day before because we didn't wake up til after 11am. It was a lovely sunny day and we spent all afternoon finishing off the two rides. That night we headed over to Hawick for 9pm to help the family move to Selkirk.
Thursday was nice weather wise, in fact the whole week was how I remember summers used to be (way back when), dry and hot weeks at a time. Although biz was nothing special we did knock out a turn. Friday was similar but at night the local bevvy boys were drinking their capacity and then some. Saturday was fine too, although this fair is probably unique in the fact that there is no Saturday afternoon. The fair didn't open until after 3pm and that was only to burn fuel. It was well after 7pm before any weight of people turned out, however they did hang around until 9pm. The bevvy crew were out in force again with as many bottles of "buckie" I have seen in a long time (most other local authorities have stamped down on drinking in public). Some had drunk so much that they were spewing up pure red coloured buckfast and then drinking on again. At 11pm when the fair did close this lead to some problems and the Police had to be called to clear the fair. This resulted in retaliation and we were awoken at 2,3 and 4am by some idiots throwing missiles at the caravans.
Sunday I was back at BI to do some maintenance on the skydiver namely adjust a limit switch, grease up the ride and replace a solenoid coil. Then back to the house, it was good to be back and get a proper hot shower instead of the tricklings of the caravans one.
Monday I had a couple of jobs to do before heading back to Selkirk via BI. It was well after 6pm when we arrived. Not much to speak of before we closed at 8:50pm. "r" and I had the two rides down and away for 11pm. Again the DZ lorry needed a fiddle with that solenoid, so I better remember to have a look at it this week.

evening, another great blog showman, in relation to the buckie boys of selkirk when i visited on the friday night at around 7pm i noticed alot of the finest wine up the high street then the same mob at the fair while speakin to yourself and "r" fair enough there out to have a good time but on the other hand u want the fair to be not just for the youths but familys so they can feel safe and secure, sorry to hear about the missiles later that night. glad selkirk was ok buis wise has been cracking few weeks down here, just about finished silage at home and getting all the tractors and trailers and implements fettled and ready for the harvest ahead could do with trickle rain to give crops a bit of a boost. miss borderer is home next thursday night so i will pop in to galashiels on my way to the airport as its a late evening flight. hope all regs are well? cheers borderer.
Selkirk always has its neds that cant handle there drink.
Gala folk are looking forward to your vist on Monday.
Hope it will be another good week for you in Galashiels, Hopefully some better rides this year as last 3 years have just been small, not like what it used to be 3 or 4 years ago when the park was only filled with the biggest rides which was much better. Cheers Sean
Morning Showman another nice blog hope bizz is reflecting the good weather. Sorry about Selkirk, funfairs always attract the drunks donno why, I'm properly old fashioned in that respect and just like to go and have a good time, don't get me wrong I don't mind a tipple now and again but tend to want to go to sleep after it. I think Ron Taylor's boxing booth might have come in handy on the night so they could have let some steam off. Maybe the law could have stepped in earlier (or some handy gaff lads). Just looking at the credentials for a ride operator Mechanical Engineer with HGV,Electrical engineer, welder, plater,Diesel fitter,Artist, and the heart of a lion to work all the long hours, and help every one else.
Regards to all, Borderer, Sean, ss, Skyliner, Blakey.

crikey!!! where we gonna find someone to tick all them boxes????
Here's some more titles that we wern't aware of...Hydraulic engineer, you didn't know you were one of them did you, but most rides have hydro motors and jacks which you have to know the principles of, at least it comes in handy. Auto motive electrician, how many times have got under the bonnet of the truck after its packed up, usually in the middle of the night, between one gaff and another, its horsing down and you haven,t slept for two days. Welding inspector, if the ride gets repaired I would think you would need to interpretate the graphs to show the ride safety officer. You need to be a bit of a safety officer your self when you are loading and unloading the machines so the teeny boppers ride safely and the gaff lads are aware of it. Here's a good one, what about a DJ you need to be aware of all the up to date stuff to pull in the crowds in the first place.
You need to be a bit of a Marjy Proops for when another family needs a shoulder to lean on. Overall an enormous responsible person and a good riding master. Sounds like you fit the bill. ("R" if you read this first get him out the paybox and he,ll have a right old laugh) Regards Flatty.
Sorry to hear of the hassle showman, i know it gets all the blame but the buckie seems to ruin some events. We managed a first for us at the weekend, being open at two gaffs at the same time. Mrs Jesters and wm at a highland games and myself and cm at a gala day. The gala day was well policed and a ban on drink was in place but it didnt stop the countless juice bottles on the ground containing a buckie looking liquid! There was a small boxing match at one of the kiosks but to give the police their due they were fast on the scene and sorted it out.
We had a decent day but Mrs Jesters didnt do so well so we gained in one hand and lost on the other! Hope Gala town is more peacefull for you showman, and hope Blakey keeping you right?
All the best to the usuals!
hello there all in blog land, how we all keeping, another good day of weather and thats the silage done for another wee while, u into galashiels now showman, picked up the new corsa for miss borderer after what she done to the focus god knows how she managed it hope this lasts longer its a 1.2 corsa sxi 54 plate so its good on the fuel. is thursday ok for u showman many thanks borderer
Public park is about full now,
Saw some working on the Drop Zone this afternoon looked scary what he was doing up that high.
Just wondering if any one knows why there is a ride at the back of the park thats not been built up ?
I thinks its called Relfex or some thing like that its been a big hit for the last 3 years will be sad to see it not built up.
I live opsite the park so i get a good view of the fun fair.
Post back if you have any ideas or info to why its not getting setup.
Cheers
Henry Evans's Reflex is on U Tube Type in Reflex fair ground ride and you'll see it working, the same ride might be the one your on about, Regards Flatty
Hello
Yes it is Henry Evans's Reflex.
I dont know why there not setting it up.
Any ideas ?
evening all-
sean- henry evans is at gala and he may set it up tommorrow as opening night tommorrow if my mind serves me right. or all the plots might be taking with other showmen. hope all regulars are well were finally finished silage here at home and i serviced the combine today and i had a little accident with the quad bike and trailer eek lol
Hello,
I am sure they don't open untill Thursday as thats the normal day they open every year.
Hopefully he dose set it up as there is plenty room at some parts of the park.
He might have not been fast enough to get in, his loss as it was a very popular ride.
I am from Gala Border, i can see the park very well.
Hi all you'll have to bare with me I'm doing this on my iPhone as the mobile Internet in not in my hands just now. The super spin (reflex) is packed up as it is not operating this year but the owner is operating another ride here so it safer to park the super spin here rather than a lorry park.
As for the drop tower it was me up the top fitting a new control box for the pole lights and yes I was wearing a harness (this time). Anywho think that's all questions answered to I'm off to bed !
Thanks for the update J, Henry E has also got his Tagada with him and setup so that should go down a storm same with the miami, I had a look at the changes you made to the miami and look very good, like the paybox.
Can you comfirm which day you open ?
Thanks
Dont worry about r he's been up the pole for year's. He'll be fine as long as he falls on his head. Did you know showman and r beat dolly the sheep to the punch. They proved you could clone donkey's 23 years ago.

we'll let him have that one cos we feel sorry for him, he's had a bad weekend setting the record for most breakdowns in one journey, in fact I heard 9 in 20 miles!! n that was only outbound!!!!!!

The shows were good last night at galashiels, going back tonight and on saterday. There was a big turn out even with the rain coming down.
I am sure i see R and showman lastnight as i think "r" was working the miami and showman was doing the dropzone.
I feel that there should have been more than 2 police offecers there which turned up late any way after 3 fights, I dont feel safe in the park as i used to as i could take my family and kids there but there are to many Scum and neds that start fights. ANy way i will be going back tonight as get a good buzz of being there even though i almost blacked out.
Cheers
Good afternoon all
Hope Galashiels is going well for you Showman. Was open at Coalburn with the Skyliner for a 1 day gala yesterday. Needing every penny I can get now as on Friday I find out I'm being made redundant from my day job in September, suppose it gives some time to get something else sorted out.
Hope all regs well
C
evening all. hope u keep ur job skyliner c, so much for out the recession every sector and buisness is struggling just now. good to meet you at west linton btw. hope all well. cheers borderer
evening all, sorry if ive not put my pennys worth in lately. been busy with silage and had basically a crap weekend well saturday night was good went to visit showman and "r" and mrs showman at galashiels as miss borderer was in paris with fellow wags and when i got home saturday night i was called to my mates house to take his wife and there newly born child to hospital as having breathing difficulties, at 00.12am sunday morning there child sadly passed away with heart problems only 12 days old, my friend and his wife were breaking there hearts and i stood in silence and made me reflect on what life throws at us and how lucky we are to have people around us we love and cherish miss borderer in my case. sunday morning a bet i put on saturday night won and £5000 was my winning total but due to the night before i wasnt for celebrating so i have gave the money to my mate and his wife for the funeral of baby "w" and for them to get away somewhere after it. sorry for dragging on hope all regulars are well.
thanks Borderer. had a meeting last night with one of the local councillors, who has made our MSP fully aware of the situation. Fingers crossed something else is found for us in the next few weeks.
Hope everyone well. Are you back at the mall now showman?
all the best
C
