a fairground life (river fest)
The river festival was the main topic of last weeks activities. I started on the Sunday prior by erecting signs in the carpark. These were to inform the drivers that the area would be closed on Thursday night from 7pm and vehicles left on site after that time would be crushed!(well not exactly those terms, but indicating that some difficulties may arise if the cars were not timely removed). It did seem to help and 75% of the carpark was clear on pulling in night. There were two rouge cars that hindered the setting of the twist until noon the next day. Apart from that everyone was onsite, set ready for building up by 9:30pm. We only had one major hiccup, the Energystorm broke a kerbstone pulling in. "r" and I returned early the next morning and repaired the damage by forming the shape with timber and pouring concrete into the mould. The repair is almost invisible to the eye, but I would not recommend driving over that one again. The event was popular as ever and at our end of the site (under the Finnieston crane) the fair looked inviting. I met with building control for an on site meeting for the funfair area license handover. Then we were joined by the Environmental Officer and finally by the Legal Dept Agent. After everyone was in agreement that the fair was good to go, I was presented with the License. How easy the showmen in England have it, not needing to have a license for a fair south of the border. It has taken since April this year to start the licensing procedure. I had to attend the licensing court, supply all safety certs , insurance docs , a scale plan and finally a police background check of all the showmen attending. We had to supply names, DOBs and addresses. Let nobody say that showmen are here today and gone tomorrow! The weather was glorious on Saturday and an estimated 50,000 flocked to the Clyde side. I assume this was because they knew of the bad forecast for Sunday. At the main pinch point of the event(along side the new BBC Scotland building), mounted Police had to control the crowds. By 4:30pm it had started to slow down. No doubt many people left early due to the congestion.
Sunday.
The rain fell into early afternoon and deterred many folk from the final day of the river festival. It was dry from 1 pm but too late as the main part of the day was over. At 6pm the fair was pulling down. I headed over to the mall to pull down there. At 7:15pm I was headed out to BOA with the miami. When I got there the ground was sodden and puddles laid on the surface. The plot was marked out but I got stuck in the mud and had to be towed into position. That would pretty much set the scene for the next day for all the heavier loads. I returned to the mall and "r" & the crew had the final loads ready to move. Again we headed off to BOA. On arrival it was too dark to see and to avoid any unnecessary damage we left the loads on the hard until morning.
the picts are of the river festival, look at those crowds.

Last games was also good and the weather was kind to us for one day at least, another games this weekend coming so hope it stays dry again. The river festival looked great, i would be happy with half those numbers. Hope boa is good for you showman. I still havent seen the back end of a tractor yet, fantastic.

Hows blakey getting on? Back from your travels yet?
Just back from truckfest; Business bit back on last year, but not suprising with the haulage business struggling at the moment. Not nearly as many trucks as previous years.
Had hectic week at the special olympics. Got there monday afternoon in time to see lewis for a couple of hours. Watched his last two qualifiers on tuesday, and then it was down too the serious medal races on wednesday. He got bronze in the freestyle and silver for the breaststroke. He then got another bronze in the freestyle relay on thursday. His last race was friday morning where he came in 7th in the back stroke. It was then a mad dash from leicester to market bosworth to pick up the caravan and head straight to truckfest [310 miles] in time for opening at seven. Lewis had a great time parading his medals to all the showmen when he arrived at truckfest today.
Showman having more breakdown probs with just about everything at boa. He now has a race against time to get the dz fixed before he opens up north on wednesday.
ah whats up with the dz showman how much u want for it i will buy it nice farm attraction lol.
Passed through boa today early afternoon. Showmans kit looked packed and ready for the road. Hope his problems are resolved for the road north. Blakey i was hopeing to pay a visit to truckfest as i usually have a wonder round but with things being the way they are these days thought i would save a couple of quid and give it a miss. Sounds like a few others had the same thought, if we could get a decent run of sunshine would make a difference. Congrats to Lewis, you will need a big cabinet for all those medals! Hope all the usuals are well..
few friends of ours were at boa for weekend and said they thouroughly enjoyed there weekend. today i have spent all day sitting in the combine and miss borderer has been shopping as we supposedly need the farm house re done i will agree with her there but when it comes to her and buying new things she gets a bit carried away like most women so heres hoping the grain price is good this evening lol. everything ok my end hope all well with jesters and blakey. showman how was boa

What kind of breakdowns is showman experiencing, traction or equipment. Recently sent one of the units to help an English showman broken down on the motorway with transmission problems. Until you see a fold away kit (twister) sitting on a standard FH 6 x 2 you forget just how far forward the pins are on these kits. Handy for a unit with a transversely fitted 100 KVA set but a real pain in the posterior for axle weights. Re where you were at the weekend. I was discussing pitch prices with a friend who had previously sponsored the event. Given the pitch prices, in this current economic climate it won’t be any big surprise if we hear that exhibit numbers are well down on previous years. Looking back, 18 month ago money couldn’t buy you a new tractor unit. Sales managers seemed to get some sort of perverse pleasure telling you it might take up to 18 months for them to supply you with new tractors. August 2009 and you can buy traction from all of the main manufacturer’s straight of the shelf, dependant on your requirements, if your willing to use a wrap, many are available for almost same day delivery. Funny old world.

hi ss. Showman having probs with traction and equipment. He's made it up north and is fixing the dz at the moment as it is operating tommorrow. He is also having mechanical problems with two lorries and has ripped the mudguard and brackets of another one. He is out of range of internet at present, but i'm sure he fill us in with details when he gets the chance. He's had such a bad run of luck lately, even i'm starting to feel sorry for him. Will meet up with him sunday night as i'm open beside him monday and tuesday,so i'll take him for a pint to cheer him up. That's if he has time of coarse.
Need to dash as i'm off to do a shift for next distribution hope all regs are ok. Nice to her from skyliner c also.

When you heading up to St Andrews? Does anybody know where Joe Richard was going to last night with his Twister. I waved to him as he was heading down the 74 but I hav'nt a clue where he was going?
good evening all showman how was buis at boa and st andrews and is all the problems with traction and equipment a ok now ?, here in the doldrums of the borders we are half way through harvest yields are slightly up on last year but grain prices are very good so theres on thing that keeps me happy and its not often u hear a farmer admit to being happy, blakey hows things your end and jesters what about yourself hope all regulars well cheers borderer
Showman. Are you doing the SECC again this year ?
Well thats my season about finished. One more booked and another couple we are trying still to get into. Then its any fireworks nights and christmas light switch ons i can get! The last highland games we were lucky with the weather and we had a reasonably busy day. Unfortunately the high pitch price was not a help. Some places are just getting too greedy. Hope showman and blakey made it back from up north?
Hope all usuals are well.
