a fairground life

Eighteen days straight and it seems like more. Biz is quiet, if I didn't need cash it would be pleasant!
"R" has been doing a few odd jobs around the place, he even got that heat shield knocked up and fitted. It doesn't look half bad. Spurred on by his efforts I mustered up some enthusiasm for delving into the inner workings of the Running light box on the skydiver. Its a matrix type, 10 channel by 4 channel. This means that the lights run in sequence 1,2,3,4 (red, green, orange, yellow) down the arms of the ride but then change to the arms running fully lit, 1 through to 10 which appears as a circle on the ride. It's the second part of the sequence thats the problem, 8 arms stay lit instead of pulsing and this overloads the system from 6A to 48A. The result is a burnt out circuit board from overheating. There is nothing evident to cause this sticky 8 arms and I think it must be a processor or communications fault some where on the board. Anyway as you can see from the picture it took a bit of reviving. Its all working again, but still with those pesky 8 sticky arms during part of the sequence. Well what can you expect, its 28 years old, I beefed it up from it original 10A to 16A per channel some years ago. It's had more come backs than Gary Glitter and even he is now finished.
Eight days to go and we will be back on the road.

Afternoon Showman some nice titbits about electronics haven't a clue myself but hope you get it figured out. Is that the heat shield required for the fuel line getting to near the exhaust? He's a good man is "r"an asset to you but needs his own equipment. Ask him what he thinks of the paper going electronic I havn't looked at it yet but it looks as if it is a step in the right direction. Was at Masham last week (plenty of people with no money) Churche's had the gaff there but they didn't appear to be doing much business. Question showman, can you tell me what happened to Eileen Ayes gallopers who used to attend Masham in the Eighties, we used to go when the boys where young so haven't kept in touch since then. I can recall these (I think three abreast) at that time but on chatting to Barry Aisbett who was attending with his toyset found out that maybe Mrs Ayes had passed on but he hadn't seen the gallopers for years. It was managed by a riding master called Willy and I can recall Mrs Ayes sat on a chair near the machine but that was ages ago and I just thought you might know somebody who knows who travels with the set now.Anyhow kind regards showman (pic still hasn't appeared) and to Sky liner c, Jesters,Borderer, and Blakey er Blakes were are you by the way we havn't had a comment for ages. Flatty

There is a myriad of airlines tucked behind the heat shield. It was one of those that softened and blew off leaving the last fair. So hopefully this will put paid to that. It's a common fault on Fodens due to the routing of the pipes in close proximity to the exhaust manifold.
As for the paper going electronic,I suggested that to them a few years ago. Its a great idea, think of the benefits to the publisher and the consumer-showmen away from a newsagent that stocks it, they can login now on their mobile tinternet and read the paper. The publisher can do away with hard printing saving money on distribution, printing and staff. They could reduce the cost of an online read to pennies against a printed version, also a years subscription to login would be even cheaper still. What about the benefits of getting news before your competitors? Online you could get that important advert or ground to let a day or so early, just like the subscription lot do now, getting the paper on thur instead of fri.Even possibilities for interaction just like FB.I will probably be their first subscriber!!We could even upload our own adverts and pictures for chatterbox. The sooner the better!Take this blog, over 51,600 page views and I haven't used a single ink cartridge or sheet of paper.
Mrs Ayes (or is it Ayres) is unknown to me, your best bet would to quiz someone from that section. The only gallopers that were up here was Grahams (who bought them from Wilmots in the 80s) and they were sold off a few years ago down south. RT has a Chance set that he got from Cumbria Taylors about 10 years ago, presumably when DT ordered his new fold up set.
As for the WF pic-if they base it on our photogenic qualities it'll never get published and if they try to photoshop it, that'll be even longer!, haha.

The pull on's started for our gaff down here showman so you have one happy fair ground fan. I had a wander over (like you do) to watch Matty and Dougie put up there big wheel, they drove down from Glasgow last night and have it half way up already. Nothing special to show folk I know but I have nothing but admiration to the graft that gets put in. The last one I saw was in Hamburg at The Dom and it started out on a bed of sleepers and railway lines with four blue steel boxes set out and bolted together, plug in the hydraulics and out popped the "A"frame I think I counted 22 artics and I'm guessing a weeks work. When finished it had log cabins I can't remember the number, in which I think 6 or more people could stand in, I just count my self lucky to have seen it, but still marvel at the design of fair ground rides in general and how they slot together but for the hydro rams and jacks they would'nt be up as quick as what they are now thats for sure.

Kind regards flatty
