a fairground life
Egremont was more or less a holiday this year. I never did a hands turn other than painting a grubby looking handrail. Friday nights biz was down on last year also. Although Saturday started off dry by 5pm the rain had came on. As the night went on it got wetter and wetter. Not that it had affected the business though as it was plain to see that the numbers where poor hours before the rain had came. We finally closed just after 9pm, but the side stuff had been pulling down since 7pm. We couldn't get the tower down due to a hoopla stall being in our way. Not having any place to shoot off to anyway we just left it all for Sunday morning. I expected it to be dry but at 9 am it was still raining. The hoopla was away by then and we got started. Before leaving I took the lorry and two jeeps down to the local garage for fuel. The price was 120.9 per liter, (ouch when it's 113.9 elsewhere) £300 later we where fueled up enough to get back home. Just before noon we headed out of the town in a small convoy, me in the DZ and the two trailers following. The rain fell all the way to Carlisle when it stopped, after that it was a bright sunny trip up. I parked the DZ on the wasteland while we juggled the loads onto the yard. Then "r" and I returned for it a couple of hours later and took it over to another showmans yard at the other side of the city. The pump for the skydiver is ready for dispatch, all I have to do is send down the cheque. We have a couple of days down time while we await pulling in to the music event. I'll get a haircut and catch up on some correspondence.
It's getting near that time of the year again, when I start reflecting, thinking, wondering about where I have been and where we are heading. I don't mean in the geographical sense either, for some reason at this time of year when it is nearly over for the traveling season I start to wonder about what could be next for us. Maybe it's an age thing, maybe it's a mid life crisis thing or maybe it's just discontentment, I don't know. What I do know is that it's a feeling of needing to make a move in some kind of profitable direction (either for cash or some other kind of benefit ). I wonder if other people (showmen or not) get this urge and if so, is it at this time of the year?
The images are a couple of random picts of my late fathers arcade just before he sold it about 8 yrs ago

well done borderer! that will kit out the hotel de borderer nicely. just keep ms b out of the italian designer shops and you might have some left for yourself! (lol)
thanks for the congrats showman, miss b so far is being sensible but we will see , in relation to moving in other directions, i may agree with u on that its this time of the year, in farming it starts early lambing and calving march april may, then into silage june, harvest july august and start of september then ploughing and seeding for next years harvest. we are now all through that and october november december and the start january i also reflect on a good year but still get that feeling about other oportunitys when were quiet. when my folkes passed away and i was given the farm and other buisness's i thought i would not can cope with it but miss b has been a great help and steps me into the right direction as im sure mrs showman and "r" will keep u on the right path when it comes to making decissions regarding these things !! when i first came to visit u and the gang at "WL" back in june i thought that you all do a great job and i admired the great rides yourself and blakey had and hooplas , everyone thinks you put up your pitch and watch the money roll in. what they dont see is the build ups regular maintanance and up keep and pull downs i take my hat off to yourself , blakey and all other showman north of the border and south, cheers borderer. hope all regs doing good.
Blimey Borderer thats a windfall and a half! Would just about clear my overdraft that would. Agree with showman, lock up ms b credit card before its gone!
Nothing new here still struggling on indoors but its getting slower every week not much nuggets about these days.
Great to see the pics of the arcade showman, didnt this have a unusual design? sliding out instead of folding out?
Can i ask what other equipment your father travelled? The arcade and paratrooper and did you mention a kiosk also?
The early dark nights always give you pause for thought showman, always hits me this time of year must be an age thing lol. Hope to see you at secc or the mall this winter at some point.
All the best to the usual suspects....
evenign all, wasnt half a windfall jesters cheers for the congrats, hope buisness picks up for u indoors this autumn/winter, jesters and showman its not an age thing lol when the dark winter nights come in i also sit and analyse the past years things and what i could do with my time in the winter and new opportunitys for the coming year but then i think life is good touch wood great fiance and great workers were like a family and the farm shops are doing good and the farming side is doing good as well but theres always something niggles away in the back of ur mind, hope all regs well cheers borderer
you wont believe this showman but i agree with you. i always take stock this time of year and try to figure out where i'm going wrong.i then try to make some positive moves.it could have something to do with mrs showman and mrs blakey trying to book holidays, and this makes us realise we havent got enough money.i made a start today by geting rid of the 4x4 before it starts to cost me more money. new car cheaper to run[twice the fuel economy]and less on the payments. also 2 year warranty so trouble free motoring for a while again. i now gonna change the mrs blakey car for a much needed van as space in the blakeymobile[lorry, aka the rocket] is at a premium.also gonna put some funds in to one of my properties to get mortage payments down before rates increase.so yes definately time to take stock and move on for me.
hope all regs well and try not to spend that money too soon borderer.
good to hear from you blakey, glad to see uve got ur financial hat on before things go up and up. the bulk of the cash is in the bank i no its not the best place but will do just now miss borderer hasnt spent much which im surprised about, just bought a new artic stock wagon for the farm today which the stock box can come off and used as flatbed for bale shifting at harvest and machinery shifting. hope all regs well cheers borderer.
john-your photo made it in this weeks WF. I haven't seen it myself, but a friend sent "r" a picture of the page.
