a fairground life

Leaving EK we had a day to kill before entering the corporate event. It was good to have a day off and it was further justified by the torrential rain that fell all day. I say justified as I usually feel guilty about doing absolutely nothing in any single day. The next morning the weather was fine and we headed off to the event location. As promised the car park area was coned off and getting set was easy (in a gated private car park, in an industrial estate, so I don't know where the stunned locals could have been (see NOTW article)). Fortunately the plan I made from google earth was accurate and I didn't need to tweak anything. Although the DZ was set up by 1pm we stayed on site to help bro finish off the dodgem. The other rides were nearly finished off too by this time. The weather was really sunny during the afternoon. Bro had just received a new top cover. It was made of PVC and still needed tie ropes to be attached. So "r" and he went off to get the rope, on their return we started the job of fitting it up. The rope was nylon so we cut it to length and then melted the ends on candles to stop them fraying. I suppose that an older generation of showman would have been able to splice them with chandler skills. Around 8pm the cover was on and we headed off home.
The next day the weather turned nasty again, it was unfortunate for the works staff but they did make a good attempt to enjoy themselves.Saturday's weather was just as poor with only a few bright periods. It was a really long day starting at 10am and finishing at 10pm. I left "r" to do the final few hours alone so Blakey and I could move the other gear to the mall that evening. The batteries were flat on the EC12 so I had to put Blakey's charger on. The rain was falling in torrents by now, but luckily after only 15 mins of charging the lorry started.
Sunday the Mrs and I were up at 4am to catch our budget flight out for a city break. Poor "r" was left to do the final day's graft at the corporate do, then pull it down and move it to the mall. The next few days he erected all the equipment ready for opening October break. When I returned mid week everything was ready. He had even tried the new pump on the skydiver. The ride was better but still not up to "new" spec so I investigated a bit further myself and noticed that a pressure gauge was lacking a few PSI. I adjusted the appropriate valve a minute amount and brought it up to as was. This did the trick and the ride is working well, just begs the question if I should have done this first before ordering a new pump. To be honest I'm glad I didn't as the old one will be a spare and the new one should see me out. Since then it's been ground hog day, business is also way back on last year.

The pict is of a juvenile I seen on my travels, I texted this photo home with the sarcastic message, "tell the NOTW I got 200K for this one!". What can I say, bloomin numpties!, problem is how many people just believe it.

once again the seeker of truth and justice has to step in again. were's the bit about r ramming one unit in to another and having to buy a new tail light while setting up at the mall. you always seem to leave out the best bits.
been busy with the driving since i returned from the aforementioned short break. i have also been busy putting one of the rental properties back together after getting new heating system. the job has been made harder as the house has wooden floors throughout.im just back from laying a carpet in one of the rooms and they will all have carpet eventually as it is rather difficult to take up a wooden floors in one piece and even harder to put it back together. i even had showman helping out a couple of weeks ago. see it's not all one way traffic with me driving for him,he does help me out as well. i even had r doing a welding job for me,and he did'nt break anything.

All quiet here, a little too quiet. Indoor pitch has been pretty slow of late, sign of the times i guess. Good to hear your busy Blakey any more flats and you will be getting called Rigsby, Lol.
Google earth is a great tool showman and also street view saves hours in the summer months on route planning. Shame the weather wasnt better at the hire but at least you got a holiday squeezed in. Good luck with the sale borderer, its def a buyers market at the moment. All the best to the usuals.

Morning Showman Nice to here from you, hope you had a nice vacation. Sounds like "r" has shown his reliability by keeping everything going in your absence, whens he off to ozz. I was thinking you would be down on a good hand when he is away but I suppose Blakey would help. I didn't realise how useful google earth could be for planning the grounds out if there is a scale to it you can plan every thing before even going there, very useful. When you need to stop the end of a rope from fraying an easy and quick way is to wrap both sides of the cut line (before you cut it) with electricians tape then do the cut. If you try to splice the ends you end up with a thicker rope and you can't thread it through the eyelet, but this would do for sheeting wagons with. (Not that you need me to tell you) Bet you never got to the bottom of the connection's of the lorry before when it had similar faults(3rd Aug)any way glad bizz has been alright. Can't be many more fairs left can there you'll be soon on to the bonfires and then into the secc for crimbo. I had a run out to Hull last week, First time for me and was amazed how big it is, I would estimate similar to Newcastle but more compact they could do with moving it out of Walton street into a bigger ground I got the impression it used to be a money spinner years ago but some prices were a pound last week that's on the big stuff and I can't see how anyone can make a living with that. But there was rakes of machines there crammed onto every street corner plenty for the punters to go at just hope everyone made a shilling. Is Blakey in the landlord business showman very impressive speculate to accumulate I suppose. Now this tail light bit what happened? Nice to here from you Jesters hope bizz is good and for you Borderer, by the way borderer if you sell the house and having all that dosh would that make you a Laird?

Regards, Flatty

john, I nearly missed your comment as it didn't appear in my mailbox. "r" off second week november for a month. I have changed my run to suit but will still have a couple of gigs to do myself. no bad thing though as it will stop the rust setting in. r reversed one unit into another and broke a tail light lens.not uncommon when shunting on fairgrounds. we were up this morning and took the ec12 into a mechanics to get looked at with regard to the electrics.

Thinking hats on again showman. What would be sweet is if "r" when he is working down under would supply you with pics and comments for the blog so we can under stand the life of the Australian showman.
The lens on the tail lights would be insignificant thought there was some damage that's all. Nice of bro to spruce up the track (any pics)
I've never seen him comment showman
is he not into this sort of thing?
Anyway thanks for the reply Flatty
